Change Doesn’t Ask for Permission
If the world waited for full agreement, we’d still be arguing about inventing the wheel. Change is rarely convenient or comfortable. Most people avoid discomfort, so they stall. They ask for more information, more input, and more time.
Meanwhile, someone else, the leader, is already taking action.
Change doesn’t wait for a show of hands. It rewards those willing to act before everything is certain. Leadership means trusting your vision enough to move, even when others still decide whether to participate.
The Trap of “Alignment”
“Let’s wait until everyone’s aligned.”
Translation: “Let’s avoid risk and stay where it feels safe.”
Alignment is proper, but waiting for it can be a trap. The more you delay, the more you lose momentum. Leaders don’t wait for consensus. They create clarity, move first, and let alignment follow movement.
By the time everyone agrees, the opportunity may have already passed.
While They Discuss, You Move
There’s always a window where the door to opportunity is open. The longer you hesitate, the smaller that window becomes. Eventually, it closes, and you're left behind.
Leaders know that timing matters. They don’t wait for perfect conditions. They move based on principles, values, and vision, not the crowd's comfort.
Others may still be asking questions. Leaders are already halfway down the road.
Leadership Is a Verb
Leadership isn’t a title or a group decision. It’s a series of intentional actions made under pressure, uncertainty, and urgency.
You won’t always be right. But you will be in motion. And that is how real progress happens.
You don’t get remembered for fitting in. You get remembered for doing what others were afraid to do.
If you’re holding back because you’re waiting for everyone else to catch up, that’s not leadership. That’s permission-seeking. The leaders who change the game are the ones who act first, take the heat, and keep moving forward.
The real question is not, “Is everyone on board?” It’s “Am I willing to go first?”
Final Reflection Question:
What decision are you holding back on just because you're waiting for others? What would happen if you led without permission?
